Bar In Review - The Gold Room

It's the kind of place you don't plan on going to, but just sort of end up there. Nestled between Baragans and a B of A in Echo Park, The Gold Room is a modest little dive bar in a neighborhood on the verge of gentrification.

My first encounter with the place - much like my first encounter withalcohol, drugs, and sex - was a solo one. Enticed by talk of cheap booze, well-endowed waitresses, and free carne asada tacos, I gave the place a try.

The interior is dim, as any good dive bar should be, with the bar patrons mainly made up locals - Hispanic males - with the occasional hipster wandering in after a show at The Echo. Despite the influx of the neighborhood hipsters, a hipster dive bar this ain't. No PBR or Natty Light on tap here, just a wide assortment of imports and domestics. No emo on the jukebox, just the basics: mariachi, Sinatra, and Creedence. Simple and uncomplicated, the way the neighborhood bar should be.

The drinks are a bargain, with beers running between two-fifty to three-fifty, and if you require a sidecar, you can get a shot of tequila for an additional dollar. It’s such a great deal; you can't afford not to get it.

Aside from the cheap drinks, thewaitresses are the other main draw to the GR; blessed with heapinghelpings of tits and ass, mere words can do these ladies no justice. They have the type of breast that guys appreciate and women admire. One hundred percent all natural, Grade A tits….. con leche. Once youget over the initial tit shock (trust me, you will be in tit shock), you realize that the ladies of the GR are a really cool bunch; flirty, fun, and extremely accommodating, and did I mention the tits?

After a couple of drinks, you pick up on the bar’s surprisingly good vibes. The locals warm up to you and you find yourself having aconversation with a middle-aged Mexican guy, in a cowboy hat, about the alien he has in a jar at his house (true story). The smoking patio out back is well-lit and cozy; a nice little retreat if the bar inside is too crowded.

Once you get to your third round of drinks in, you'll appreciate the surprisingly well-kept restrooms. As far as dive bars go, one has very low expectations of the facilities. A drain out back? A rimless bucket hanging from the door? Not here. This place has some of the nicest facilities I ever had the pleasure of taking a long, inebriated piss in. Clean floors, fresh smell, and they even have a counter above the urinals if one is so inclined to bring his drink. And the Ladies room? Let's just say they don't call it the powder room for nothing. That place has seen more blow than a coffee table at a 70's porn shoot. Yet I digress.

All in all, the GR has a lot to offer. If you’re in the neighborhood it’s worth a stop - unless you're one of the aforementioned hipsters. You come for the tits and stay for the tacos. What more can you ask for?
